Happy Valley vs. Warrenton BABAS win!
Sat 9/11/10- The revamped Barbarians of Happy Valley hosted reigning PRU D3 Champion Warrenton at our off campus field in Port Matilda. The Baba’s were nervous, as many steady players had moved on or were unavailable for the game.  But due to new recruits and the return of Pete Steinberg as coach and part time player to the club, there was a new energy to the club.  Energy that hopefully would return the Baba’s to the National D3 Elite.

Warrenton kicked off and with some rusty players on both sides, some scrappy play slowed the game down for the first 10 minutes.  Lots of knock on’s, and some unique refereeing resulted in a lot of slow ball.  Fifteen minutes in, Warrenton has a penalty to convert, but missed the kick wide left.  With good support and decent phase ball, the Baba’s led by Brett Bissinger and Jud Millar in the loose, worked the ball down to the 22 m of Warrenton, and English/British Tom scored in the corner.  Tulip missed the convert, it was now 5-0 HV.  The half continued with some sloppy play and a lot of penalties, but the Baba defense was stout, led by new addition Jake Thuma.  Newcomers, Zach, Pete, and Bret were fed into the fire but played smartly, not giving any stupid penalties.  With 2 minutes left in the half, Warrenton did not roll away from tackle and Tulip had a chance to convert for a penalty, but Morne Steyn he is not, and missed.  Halftime 5-0 HV.

The 2nd half Warrenton woke up and played a several phase balanced attack, with a try under the posts about 10 min in the half.  They converted, now 5-7.  Happy Valley came back strong with a few new subs, as Pete came in for Owsh, and Drager in for an injured Matt Langston.  After a call against Warrenton for obstruction, the forwards worked the ball in off a penalty and Jud set it down for a try.  This time Tulip did convert we are now up 12-7.  Both sides started to tire and the ballgame slowed down a bit.  Warrenton started to panic and tried to get the ball out a bit too wide and Drew Funk intercepted and set the ball down for his first try of the year, we are now up 17-7.  Soon it was apparent that the Baba’s well coached and disciplined play was the better of the teams, and we ended up winning 17-7.   Man of the Match was English/British Tom and Drew Funk.

A inters quad B game was played afterwards.  Happy Valley won that one as well.  Bernie played and was brilliant.

A side was Jud, Jake, Bret/Tim, Pete/Andrew, Zach/Tim, Brett/Brandon, Hank, Joey, Owsh/Pete, Tulip, Steve W/Dan M., Drew, English Tom, Matt/Drager, Jeremy/Zach.

Next game is at Chambersburg on Sat 9/18.  Any complaints or incorrect statements concerning the above match report shall be ignored and ridiculed.
