Babas V. Chambersburg.. BABAS WIN!
The Happy Valley Barbarians Men’s Rugby Club hosted their in state rival, Chambersburg Rugby Club, on Saturday October 10 at Autumn Meadow Field in Halfmoon Township.
The Barbarians came into the game at 4 wins and no losses, while Chambersburg was 0-4. Missing several regular players, the Baba’s started off strong, with an aggressive kickoff and maintaining ball control for the first 5 minutes. Right in front of the posts, Chambersburg committed a penalty, which was converted by Patrick Kiely, and the Baba’s were up by 3-0. Soon thereafter, the Baba front row of Brett Bissinger, Henry Nguyen and Andy Haines won an opposing scrum, “off the head” and the ball worked out to C, who danced down the sidelines for the first try of the day, and Patrick converted. Baba’s up 10-0. A few minutes later, winger T. worked the ball down the sideline and was tackled around the neck by Chambersburg and a penalty was awarded to Happy Valley. Schweppe quickly took the penalty kick, ran through 2 tacklers and scored. Patrick again converted, Baba’s up 17-0. About 5 minutes later, Henry broke several tacklers off a winning maul and scored in the center of the try zone. Patrick converted again; score was now 24-0. Babas dominated play, with great forward work by Jud Millar, Brandon Zlupko and support in the backs by Mike Green and Jeremy Bischoff. Schweppe then scored his 2nd try of the day through a rambling run and put the ball down in the corner, 29-0. Patrick could not convert the extra points. The halftime whistle blew, with Baba’s up 29-0.
Both Patrick and Schweppe left the game with injuries, with Patrick screaming like a b***h on the ground. The beginning of the second half saw some sloppy rugby by the Baba’s. Chambersburg outworked the Baba’s driving the ball down into the Baba half and finally scoring after a couple of attempts; score was now 29-7. After some emotional outbursts, the Baba’s picked up some steam, and gave the ball to Steve T (Half Speed) who drove through the Chambersburg pack to score a try, which was converted by Tulip. Score was now 36-7. The last 20 minutes saw some substitutions which build out depth and the scoring was finished with a driving try by Drew Funk and a dance along the sideline by Thatcher, who scored his first A side try, and we converted both with a final score of 50-7.
