March 28, 2009. Western Suburbs at Happy Valley
This past Saturday, the PRU D3 champions Western Suburbs traveled to
face off against the Barbarians of Happy Valley. The game was played
at Autumn Meadow Field in Halfmoon, one of our rare trips off campus.
Facing their toughest challenge, the Barbarians came out charging with
tough defense and some tough running. Off one of the 2nd scrum, the
ball worked out to Tony Monaco who ran in 25 m to score. Well, kind
of, he ran out of the try zone as we had to use the football posts
which were now in the back of the try zone not in the front. Tony
unfortunately touched down over the try zone end line, so...no try.
Meathead is his middle name.
However the Barbarians continued with good possession, working out
good ball to the backs and come back with a bruising run in for points
by Schweppe to put ahead the Babas by 5. Patrick Keily converted, we
are now up 7-0. Suburbs capitalized on some penalizing play by the
Baba's and converted a penalty kick. 7-3. The Babas continued a
bruising controlling style of rugby, working possessions, making the
gainline and finally getting the ball out to Deerhunter, who danced in
to the try for another 5 points. Conversion was missed by Patrick.
Score is now 12-3. However, some bad decisions in the tackles by the
Baba's resulted in another penalty kick by Suburbs, who now were down
by 6, 12-6 Babas.
Set play went well, with Jack Ambler and Gorgeous George Long winning
ball and controlling our portion of the lineouts. Late in the 2nd
half, on a great lineout possession, started by Jack, the ball worked
out to the backs, with some help from flanker Sean Riggle and outside
centre Jeremy Bischoff touched down for the 3rd try of the day.
Patrick converted, now 19-6.
2nd half saw Bob Ricketts come in for Sean Riggle and Brett Bissinger
come in for a bloody Allen Wolfe. However, the momentum turned as the
Suburbs team, headed for the MARFU playoffs, worked the field and
started putting the Baba's on their heels.
Deerhunter had to go chase deer in the woods, so Tom Hay and Mohammed
Abdullah came in for Deer and Crapplegate respectively. Tom as always
delivered some massive hits, but the Suburbs lad started to show their
fitness levels and experience, putting down for their first try, and
the score was now 19-11. Soon the defense broke down again, with
Suburbs scoring through a series of possessions and now scored their
2nd try, and converted, 19-18.
Time was running out, but the Suburbs lads showed why they are tops in
the PRU D3, and received a penalty underneath the Baba posts, as the
Baba's were playing desperate defense. Penalty was converted and the
good guys were down 21-19. Well, we tried to come back, but time ran
out and the final was 21-19 Suburbs. Good game and good effort.
The B game kicked off with 14 vs 14. In an exciting wide open game,
Tom Hay scored twice, Hammerin Hank the Vietnam Rocket, scored 2 tries
with a beautiful dance down the sideline. Scoring try's for the first
time ever was Kris and Steve Trialonus. Mohammed also scored as the B
side won 34-22.
A side was Schweppe, Riggle, Patrick, George, Jack A, Henry, Wolfe and
Brandon in the pack. Deerhunter, Rebar, Jeremy, Tony, Crapplegate,
Neil and Ethan in the backs. Subs were Tom, Mo, Brett and Ricketts.
B side was Jud, Henry, Steve, Rodney, Andy, Roland, Bernie, Austin,
Kris, Mo, Tom Hay, Crapplegate.
Thanks for the field committee of Andy, Brandon, Flude, Crapplegate,
Jason, Ethan for setting up and arranging the field. Brett Hoffman
thankfully filled in as referee for us.
Congrats to the men of the match-Jack and George A side and Mohammad for B-side.
Congrats to Jeff Brytzcuk and his family with their new arrival of
their daughter.
