Happy Valley Barbarians v Frederick RFC, April 28, 2012
The Baba’s returned home after a month of traveling with a game at our new pitch, Orchard Park. Frederick RFC was the opponent, and Division 2 team based south of here, in Frederick Maryland. Frederick for many years was one of the best D2 teams in the nation, but have not had recent success, with many of their regulars aging and moving on.
With a solid 25 at the pitch, the game kicked off and quickly we found that people don’t like to tackle Vinh Vuong, as he stumbled 50 m through several tacklers, before support got to him and the pill went out wide to Steve Wilk who scored a try about 3 minutes in. Conversion missed, 5-0. About 5 minutes later, Jon Estable (“Blackie Chan”) took the ball wide and scored in the corner, we are now up 10-0. Then Drew Funk took a weaving, turning run and scored up the middle, and Jimmy Martin converted now 17-0. Our captain then took a driving maul off a lineout, scooped right and Hank Nguyen set the ball down for another try, but the conversion was missed. 22-0. Things settled down as Frederick realized that we were playing well and stiffened up a bit, but another weaving run by Tristan was set down under the posts, and Jimmy converted, we are now up 29-0. About 5 minutes later, Chris Helwig had beautiful breakaway run, and offloaded into support to Jimmy who set it down, but could not convert, now 34-0. At the end of the half, Dave Fisher scooted down the sidelines and had the final try of the half, 39-0. The Baba’s were on fire, rucking well, tackling and supporting their team.
At the start of the 2nd half, Nick Johnson came in for Flip it, and Steve Mc Donald came on for Steve Wilk. Frederick came out hard, but an turnover resulted in multi phase play and Hank set down for his 2nd try, which Dave Fisher converted, not 46-0. More subs were made, Brice, Travis, Mike, Anthony coming in, as we could see where this match was going. Frederick did jump in for a try which was converted now 46-7. About 20 min in the 2nd half, Steven McDonald had a long gallop down the sidelines and converted a try, now 51-7. A few minutes later, Travis Mason scampered down and scored a try under the posts, which he converted now 58-7. At the 25 minute mark, Frederick scored again, but could not convert, 58-12. I was amazed how enthusiastic a team down by 50 points could get, but was quickly reprimanded by Hank. However, Jake McDonald from the wing ran through several tacklers and scampered down to score his first try of the day, which he could not convert. Now 63-12. A few minutes later Drew Funk scored again, with a bruising run, and Travis converted, now 70-12. More subs were made, now everyone was in the game at some point. Blackie Chan then took bruising hits to another level and ran through Frederick defenders to score again, now 75-12. Frederick rebounded scoring a try through the middle, and converted 75-19. Finally at the last minute Blackie Chan ran around and thru Frederick, to score again final score 80-19.
A 20 min B side was played and we were tired from scoring so much, so Frederick scored to twice, Dave Fisher scored once and we lost the B game, 10-7.
Thanks to Shawn and Bernie for lending us the temporary posts, thanks to all who set up the field, Flip/Whip it for setting up the social and Blackie Chan for hosting the social.
